Located in the city of Røros, it is the key church for the Røros parish which is part of the Gauldal prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nidaros. The church seats about 1,600 individuals, building it the 5th premier church inside of the Church of Norway. It is also rated by Riksantikvaren as a person of the ten most crucial church buildings in Norway.
The octagonal, whitewashed stone church was finished in 1784 on the basis of plans by architect Peter Leonard Neumann from Trondheim. The stone construction materials was slate from Gammelvollia or Sundlia in Troms. The church was consecrated on 15 August 1784 by Marcus Fredrik Bang, Bishop of the Diocese of Nidaros.
The pulpit and altar had been intended by Peder Ellingsen (1725-1803), who as the guide builder at Røros Copper Functions, was liable for the furnishing woodwork. The altarpiece capabilities a painting from 1792 entitled Innstiftelsen av nattverden by artist Johan Jørgen Lyng (1756-1793). The baptismal font is from 1913.
