St Mary’s church in Lapworth is a single of the most gratifying and unconventional medieval parish church buildings in Warwickshire. The visitor frequently ways this handsome constructing from the north where the strong tower and spire stand guard like a sentinel. It is unusual in standing aside from the major setting up and was at first detached but is now connected by a passageway to the north aisle, making the church almost as large as it is lengthy. The west end also is remarkably configured with a chantry chapel or area established over an archway (permitting passage throughout the churchyard under).
The church we see currently dates primarily from the 13th / 14th centuries, with an amazing fifteenth century clerestorey additional to the nave being a distinguished function externally, but within it is doable to discern traces of the past Norman framework embedded down below in the nave arcade. There is much of desire to love in this nice interior from quirky carvings higher in the nave to the abundant stained glass in the chancel and north chapel (which has benefitted immensely from a freshly inserted window exactly where the east wall had earlier been blank). The most interesting memorial is the reduction tablet in the north chapel by Eric Gill.
Lapworth church has consistently welcomed people and continues to be militantly open now inspite of getting surrounded by churches mainly reluctant to re-open up immediately after Covid. Fortunately due to the fact Tony Naylor’s high-quality new window was installed the prior alarm method that limited entry to the eastern half of the church (which I inadvertedly set off on my first at any time visit, deafening the neighbours!) has been calm so that site visitors can now enjoy the total extent of the interior and its fittings.
