The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, located in Port Hadlock, Washington, is a private, accredited non-profit vocational school that aims to teach and preserve the fine art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts. In 2007, under the direction of Master Boatbuilder Jeff Hammond, the school’s Traditional Large Craft Class built a Haven 12 1/2 for a client. The Haven 12 1/2 is a daysailor adapted from Nathanael Herreshoff’s 1914 design by popular designer Joel White.
Joel White was a renowned yacht designer who passed away in 1997. His obituary, which provides a good summary of his work, can be found online. Nathanael Herreshoff, on the other hand, is often called “the Wizard of Bristol” for his mastery of yacht design. More information about him can be found on the Herreshoff Marine Museum’s website.
The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding’s mission is to teach and preserve the fine art of wooden boatbuilding and traditional maritime crafts. The school can be contacted via e-mail or phone, and more information about the school can be found on their website.
The Haven 12 1/2 built by the Traditional Large Craft Class was constructed under the guidance of Jeff Hammond, a master boatbuilder. The class involved students in the construction process of the daysailor, and one student, Carter Conklin, was pictured working on a detail of the framing under the coaming around the cockpit.
Overall, the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is dedicated to educating the public about the art of wooden boatbuilding, while also preserving it for future generations. Their work on the Haven 12 1/2 is just one example of how they are fulfilling this mission.
