Chloe was introduced in 1960. Particulars are sketchy till the late 1970’s when she was acquired by Greg Smith in Rowayton, CT. A study recognized her as having been constructed in Norway, but her builder is unknown. Since the primary mahogany planking had deteriorated, Smith had the hull re-planked with bronze-mounted Alaskan Yellow Cedar by a shipwright identified as Pieter Den Hartog of Hamilton Woodworking. Greg sailed Chloe on Lengthy Island Audio right until 1985 when he moved to Seattle.
In the early 1990s, Chloe’s deck and sheer plank had been weakened by a storm in Port Hadlock. A 2nd restoration was undertaken by Greg’s brother, Charlie Smith, previous captain of Neil Young’s 100′ Baltic Schooner, Ragland. The deck and house have been replaced, and a self-baling cockpit was installed.
Soon after several spouse and children adventures in the Salish Sea, Greg donated Chloe to The Centre for Picket Boats in Seattle in 2018. Brandt Faatz, then Executive Director at CWB, procured Chloe. She was in fine situation but necessary cosmetic work.
Just after a haul-out to refresh base and topsides paint, Brandt stripped and refinished the mast in December 2019 making use of Awlwood. The house and comings have been refinished as a spring 2020 lockdown challenge.
Chloe sailed Seattle’s Lake Union by means of the summer time of 2020 and relocated to Port Townsend in November. She now resides in Port Townsend’s Boat Haven.
