Port Hadlock WA - Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding - Contemporary class - Iain Oughtred-designed Caledonia Yawl

The Caledonia Yawl was created by Ian Oughtred for development in glued lapstrake maritime plywood, and is 1 of his most common layouts.

Our college students developed this boat, a single of two so far, for Camp 4 Winds/Westward Ho on Orcas Island in the San Juan Islands in Washington Condition. www.fourwindscamp.org/

It is 19′ 6″ long with a beam of 6′ 1″. She’ll draw about 11 inches with the centerboard up and 3′ 6″ with the centerboard down. The boat weighs about 350 lbs . in its “as-intended” configuration, and can simply be custom-made to an owner’s needs. It can be built as a sloop (a single mast) or yawl (two masts).

Oughtred’s guide, Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Handbook, describes his solutions for developing these wonderful, useful boats. Although his strategies differ a little bit from ours, the two generate superlative outcomes. www.amazon.com/Clinker-Plywood-Boatbuilding-Manual-Oughtr…

Nic Compton’s biography of Ian Oughtred, A Daily life in boats, captures this complicated, enigmatic designer. www.woodenboatstore.com/item/325-144

” Late at night, out in the workshop, builder’s of Iain’s boats have normally admitted to inner thoughts of invisible organization, of getting aspect of a thing considerably bigger a robust perception that in the act of operating with this kind of splendor they too have come to be aspect of that terrific pantheon of boatbuilders. -Robert Ayliffe, founder, Duck Flat Wooden Boats
