Pemberton Hall, Salisbury WI-1

“Pemberton Hall, situated on a big tract of land bordering the Wicomico River, is the earliest dwelling to continue being standing in the immediate vicinity of Salisbury. Dated by an inscribed brick located above the east gable finish doorway, the gambrel roofed, a few-area strategy property is distinguished by Flemish bond brickwork with a glazed header checkerboard pattern, plastered cove cornices, and extensive mid eighteenth-century woodwork. Construction of Pemberton Corridor was completed by Isaac Handy (1706-1762) on land he obtained in 1726 from Joseph Pemberton. In addition to being a sizable land operator and merchantplanter, Isaac Handy also served as a Justice of the Peace and a colonel in the Maryland militia. Prior to the official generation of Salisbury in 1732, the little community at the head of the Wicomico River was recognized as “Handy’s Landing.””
