Patriki-Tuzluca is a village in the Famagusta District of Cyprus, located on the Karpas Peninsula. It is below the de facto handle of Northern Cyprus.
Patriki is the ancestral dwelling of singer George Michael (Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou). His father, Kyriacos Panayiotou, was born right here in 1935 and lived in the village operating with family members till 1953 when he still left for England.[2]
The village has been under Turkish occupation given that the 1974 invasion. The village applied to be inhabited by Greek-Cypriots. In his e book Historic Cyprus (2nd edition 1947) Rupert Gunnis (who was Inspector of Antiquities on the island at the time) wrote:
“The principal church of the village devoted to the Archangel Michael is with no desire. “A single of the most curious local customs continue to remaining in the island is practised every single Easter Monday in this village all the married people acquire into the churchyard, and the men, with no having off their coats, have to crawl as a result of a gap in a massive stone which stands right here. If the male is unable to crawl by way of this stone it indicates that his wife is unfaithful to him, for it shows that he has antlers which prevent him from passing via. In 1935 only just one man stuck, and he, on his return residence, beat his spouse and has because commenced divorce proceedings, the fact that he was not able to move as a result of the stone being regarded by him and his co-villagers as ample evidence.”
Pre 1974 the major church utilised by the Greek-Orthodox villagers was Archangelos Michail, on the other hand it was desecrated by the Turks post-1974 and has been utilized as a mosque given that.
