Jesus Higher education may well not be the oldest of Cambridge’s faculties, but regardless it can continue to boast the oldest chapel. The existing cruciform making was formerly the monastic church of St Mary & St Radegund, a convent of nuns established in 1157. This was dissolved in 1496 when the existing university was founded on the exact website by Bishop John Alcock with the previous convent church tailored to use as the current college or university chapel, which involved numerous modifications to its framework which includes the demolition of various elements such as the better element of the nave. The current chapel is therefore a lowered model of the initial church, but it is nevertheless distinctly unique in type from other college or university chapels, generating its former monastic use all the much more obvious.
Just one ways the chapel from the north west through a cloister (considerably altered from its unique point out) and it is promptly crystal clear that much of the nave has been changed by higher education buildings, reducing it to related proportions to the transepts. The central tower is square and to some degree squat, a late medieval rebuild following the basis of the university.
Within the truncated nave there would be a feeling of starkness from the basic white walls had been it not for the splashes of colour from the home windows and the richly decorated ceiling, all gorgeous illustrations of Pre-Raphaelite art by William Morris and his circle, the chapel windows getting mainly filled with a collection of figures from cartoons by Burne Jones. The effect is prosperous and gratifying and has breathed new existence into this historical constructing. The choir further than is partly hid by loaded woodwork, the chancel display and the elaborately carved stalls which keep some notable illustrations of late medieval carving. The choir itself is a handsome instance of Early English architecture with slender lancet home windows, these staying crammed with Hardman glass, the only windows not adorned with Morris & Co models.
Jesus College Chapel is 1 of my complete favourites, a delightful building with some wonderful glass. Fortunately it appears to be 1 of the extra visitor pleasant colleges in Cambridge obtaining generally uncovered it feasible to wander about freely even though by some means avoiding the crowds of travelers that specific other Cambridge schools draw in.
