Brick by brick and arch by arch, this 32:1 scale wood-carving of the North Entrance of Westminster Abbey was built by architect and woodworker Richard C. Lane just as the initial cathedral masters developed the famed church.
Mr. Lane began construction of the piece in 2005, at the age of 85. The challenge was started off as a study in architecture and an endeavor to recognize the life and faith of these who created Westminster Abbey.
He traveled to England to analyze the gothic cathedral and just after getting buddies with the Westminster librarian, was permitted to visit, study and sketch portions of the composition not open up to the community.
The 55 in. large by 36 in. deep by 57 in. tall model was assembled from poplar, basswood and hardwood logs that Lane milled down in his basement shop. Whilst he made use of his band saw and miter saw for the rough chopping, all the high-quality detail work was carried out by hand using chisels.
The rebuilt Westminster Abbey product was exhibited in the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum during the 2013 ArtPrize, an art show held all over downtown Grand Rapids, Mich. It has due to the fact been donated to Grand Valley State College in close by Allendale, in which it will be place on show and preserved.
