“Nayland’s St. James Church in Suffolk”

St James, Nayland, Suffolk

Nayland is a picturesque village in Suffolk with beautiful scenery and a wealth of history to explore. St James Church is a particular highlight with its grand architecture, Anglo-catholic furnishings and interesting medieval features. The church boasts beautiful stained-glass windows, a high chancel and a peculiar funeral bier in the south aisle. There are also six brasses to the Sekyn, Hacche and Davy families, and a medieval roodscreen that’s still partially intact. The village has an intriguing history, and the legacy of the quiet clergyman William Jones of Nayland, though now forgotten, was incredibly influential in the formation of the illustrious Oxford Movement and the Methodist movement. Although Nayland may not be high on the ecclesiological tourist circuit, there is much to see and explore here.
