The Monastery of St Martin of Tibães (Portuguese: Mosteiro de São Martinho de Tibães) is a monastery situated in the parish of Mire de Tibães, in the vicinity of Braga, in northern Portugal. It was the mom household of the Benedictine purchase in Portugal and Brazil, and it is regarded for the exuberant Rococo decoration of its church.

Background
The initially information about a monastic local community in the region – the Monastery of Dumio, near to Tibães, established by Saint Martin of Braga – dates from the 6th century.
The Monastery of Tibães was established about 1060, and its feudal rights have been granted by Henry of Burgundy, Depend of Portugal, in 1110. In the course of the Middle Ages, after the Kingdom of Portugal became unbiased, abundant and extensive houses in the North of the country arrived into the possession of the Monastery. However, thanks to the extensive reconstruction function carried out in the 17th and 18th centuries, there are no architectural remnants from this early stage of the ensemble.
In 1567, the Monastery of Tibães grew to become the mother property of the Purchase of Saint Benedict for Portugal and the colony of Brazil, with the 1st general collecting of the Order taking place in Tibães in 1570. In the first 50 % of the 17th century, in watch of the ruined problem of the aged monastery and the vast resources at their disposal, the monks began the radical rebuilding that gave origin to the ensemble that exists today. The works began with the cloisters (Refectory and Cemetery cloisters) and the church, which was designed involving 1628 and 1661 in Mannerist type by architects Manuel Álvares and João Turriano. By the starting of the 18th century the new wings of the Monastery had been completed, together with the Gate House, the Dormitory, the Visitor Residence, the Chapter Home and the Library.

For the duration of the 17th and 18th hundreds of years, the Monastery was a web site of substantial artistic action and experienced an monumental affect in the Baroque and Rococo art of Northern Portugal and overseas colonies. In the years 1757-1760, architect André Soares created the major altarpiece and the woodwork of the triumphal arch of the primary chapel, as well as the pulpits and lateral altarpieces, all of which are landmarks in Portuguese Rococo art. The gilded woodwork was sculpted by famed José de Santo António Vilaça. Many statues in the church are by the hand of an additional celebrated sculptor, Cipriano da Cruz.
Offered at an auction sale in 1864, the Tibães Monastery and all its surrounding spots fell into decay and destroy. A fantastic portion of the ensemble, like the Refectory Cloister, was ruined in a hearth in 1894. In 1986 the Monastery grew to become a State house and an in depth restoration task was commenced that carries on to this day.
