The Monastery of St Martin of Tibães (Portuguese: Mosteiro de São Martinho de Tibães) is a monastery positioned in the parish of Mire de Tibães, close to Braga, in northern Portugal. It was the mother property of the Benedictine purchase in Portugal and Brazil, and it is identified for the exuberant Rococo decoration of its church.
Background
The initially data about a monastic group in the region – the Monastery of Dumio, shut to Tibães, founded by Saint Martin of Braga – dates from the 6th century.
The Monastery of Tibães was established around 1060, and its feudal legal rights were being granted by Henry of Burgundy, Depend of Portugal, in 1110. Sold at an auction sale in 1864, the Tibães Monastery and all its surrounding locations fell into decay and damage. A excellent portion of the ensemble, which includes the Refectory Cloister, was ruined in a fire in 1894.
