The Monastery of St Martin of Tibães (Portuguese: Mosteiro de São Martinho de Tibães) is a monastery positioned in the parish of Mire de Tibães, in close proximity to Braga, in northern Portugal. It was the mother house of the Benedictine order in Portugal and Brazil, and it is recognised for the exuberant Rococo decoration of its church.
History
The first details about a monastic local community in the area – the Monastery of Dumio, shut to Tibães, started by Saint Martin of Braga – dates from the 6th century.
The Monastery of Tibães was launched around 1060, and its feudal rights were granted by Henry of Burgundy, Rely of Portugal, in 1110. Through the Middle Ages, following the Kingdom of Portugal turned independent, wealthy and large attributes in the North of the nation arrived into the possession of the Monastery. Through the 17th and 18th generations, the Monastery was a web-site of appreciable creative activity and had an tremendous affect in the Baroque and Rococo art of Northern Portugal and abroad colonies. Bought at an auction sale in 1864, the Tibães Monastery and all its encompassing locations fell into decay and ruin. A wonderful aspect of the ensemble, such as the Refectory Cloister, was destroyed in a hearth in 1894. In 1986 the Monastery turned a Point out house and an comprehensive restoration job was begun that continues to this day.
