From the commitment adhering to a 1982 remodeling. “The current Marquette County Courthouse stands on the website of the County’s

Redbeach, Maine and transported to Marquette. This was big enterprise as each individual column weighs 15 tons. The main corridors are lined with Italian marble wainscot and the flooring is vitrified mosaic tile set in a decorative sample.

Numerous columns of Scagliola plaster also appoint the corridors. The woodwork and furnishings are made of fantastic hardwood. The interior and exterior focal stage of the developing is an elaborate stained glass dome which is situated higher than the
most important circuit courtroom and is shielded from the components by an exterior copper sheathed dome.

The courthouse has liked a rich background. In 1913, former President Theodore Roosevelt submitted a libel match against George A. Newett, publisher of the Ishpeming Iron Ore. Newett experienced noted that Roosevelt “was addicted to the use
of liquor and a consumer of profanity.” Judge R. C. Flannigan uncovered Newett guilty and purchased him to shell out Roosevelt damages in the quantity of 6 cents, “the rate of a fantastic newspaper.” Far more recently, the courthouse served as the environment for quite a few
scenes of the 1959 filming of Anatomy of a Murder, directed by Otto Preminger and starring James Stewart, Ben Gazzara, George C. Scott, and Lee Remick.

The renovation of the courthouse was at first conceived in 1977 and programs were drawn by neighborhood architect Lincoln A. Poley, Jr. The Tezak Building Company of Traverse Town, Michigan commenced the renovation work in 1982 for a value
of $1,784,648. The attractive portray which seems in the clerk’s office environment, main corridors and in the key courtroom was accomplished by Conrad Schmitt Studios of New Berlin, Wisconsin for a price tag of $179,500.

This monumental structure inspired Judge J. W. Stone to include the following passage in his 1904 dedication tackle. As we rededicate the Marquette County Courthouse his terms continue to ring accurate.
“….This beautiful composition, this temple of justice, is to stand here as a monument to government, to law and buy, as distinguished from anarchy lawlessness and disorder…..Its presence listed here simply cannot are unsuccessful to have a salutary
affect upon the persons outdated and youthful, wealthy and very poor. And, if a thing of beauty is a joy forever, its charm to our sensibilities will ever make us glad.”
