A pair hundred makers, academics and mom and dad gathered at the 2nd Maker Educator Convening, held May perhaps 17 – 18, 2016, at The Crucible in Oakland, CA. This was my initial conference as a maker art teacher, and it was a great way to link with other educators and learn from each other.
We began with a pay a visit to of The Crucible, an wonderful arts college that gives youth and adult classes in glass blowing, woodworking, jewelry, welding and more — a great design for planning our have makerspaces ( thecrucible.org/ ) .
We then viewed and discussed ‘Most Very likely to Succeed’, an fantastic documentary on schooling in the 21st century ( www.mltsfilm.org/ ). It demonstrates illustrations of palms-on, project-dependent, student-pushed and collaborative learning — and how this new tactic can support learners obtain a feeling of intent and develop a must have ‘soft skills’, not just technical expertise.
The morning keynote by Nichole Pinkard was also incredibly inspiring, as she presented her results from the Digital Youth Network in Chicago, and led a discussion about deepening the effects of maker training by bridging finding out frameworks.
We then acquired our fingers soiled to map our maker educator community, applying blinking LEDs, article-it notes and pipe cleaners to signify our a variety of faculties and makerspaces on a U.S. map — which showed clearly that a the greater part of contributors arrived from California.
