One the absolute highlights of my stop by, St Edmund’s church in Southwold is just one of -the most amazing parish church buildings in the place. Arriving late in the afternoon I was delighted to discover the church continue to open and eliminate myself in its wonderful interior.
The developing dates from the latter 50 % of the 15th century and will make an assertive statement, all grandeur and civic pleasure on a grand scale. Excellent Perpendicular traceried windows punctuate the walls of the full edifice and make it gloriously light within (primarily plain glazed as no initial glass survives and wartime bombing taken off what the Victorians put in).
Within just the eye is drawn to the hammerbeam roof, adorned with angels (however all are partly or wholly Victorian replacements for the originals that were being mutilated by iconoclasts). The chancel past (structurally steady) adds to the effect even more with its ceiling painted in a heavenly shade of blue. A canopy of honour is produced between the two halves with painted figures of angels, overpainted by restorers but stylistically obviously near to the first work beneath.
This ceilure of study course extra emphasis to the rood, extensive considering the fact that vanished alas but the monitor that supported it remains and is the most extraordinary feature of the church, extending its full width (while the screens in the aisles could be identified as separate additions). All the decrease panels retain their sequence of late medieval painted figures like an uncommon sequence of angels, but sadly all have been defaced by iconoclasts, most probable through the reign of Edward VI when the biggest militant purge of church artwork transpired. The high quality and richness of detail nonetheless is even now obvious.
The choir retains some good medieval carved woodwork together with choir stalls (the misericords are disappointingly basic styles, but the armrests function a lot more lively details). Ornate screens enclose this space on possibly side.
This vast church calls for time to soak up its ambiance and bask in its beauties, it is just one of the loveliest buildings 1 could hope to go to and will reward any customer to this pictureque seaside town, remaining frequently kept open and welcoming inside reasonable hours.
