St John The Baptist
Church of England

The Lord’s Prayer

The church dates back again to C12 and was allegedly founded in reaction to Pagan worship on the close by White Horse Hill.

Unusually, its inside was still left mostly untouched by the Victorians, and as a end result it offers exceptional C14 wall paintings depicting Peter, Paul, Herod and Salomé (with the Baptist’s head on a platter), attractive medieval stained glass, and exceptional C15 to C17 woodwork, which include high-quality bench ends, panelling, pulpit and rood screen.

Unfortunately, irrespective of this treasure trove of heritage the church fell into these a poor state of mend that it was placed on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ Sign-up, and even confronted imminent closure.

The good thing is the community group rallied all over to preserve their gorgeous neighborhood landmark and a restoration challenge will commence in the summer time of 2015.

St John The Baptist is Quality II* Listed.
