St John The Baptist
Church of England
10 Commandmets
The church dates back again to C12 and was allegedly founded in response to Pagan worship on the nearby White Horse Hill.
Unusually, its interior was left largely untouched by the Victorians, and as a consequence it features exceptional C14 wall paintings depicting Peter, Paul, Herod and Salomé (with the Baptist’s head on a platter), wonderful medieval stained glass, and remarkable C15 to C17 woodwork, together with fine bench ends, panelling, pulpit and rood screen.
Sadly, even with this treasure trove of heritage the church fell into this kind of a bad state of mend that it was put on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ Sign up, and even confronted imminent closure.
Fortunately the neighborhood group rallied about to conserve their wonderful local landmark and a restoration job will start off in the summer months of 2015.
St John The Baptist is Quality II* Outlined.
