St John The Baptist
Church of England

The church dates back to C12 and was allegedly started in reaction to Pagan worship on the nearby White Horse Hill.

Unusually, its interior was remaining mainly untouched by the Victorians, and as a end result it boasts unusual C14 wall paintings depicting Peter, Paul, Herod and Salomé (with the Baptist’s head on a platter), beautiful medieval stained glass, and fantastic C15 to C17 woodwork, including good bench finishes, panelling, pulpit and rood display screen.

Regrettably, inspite of this treasure trove of heritage the church fell into this sort of a poor point out of mend that it was placed on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ Sign up, and even confronted imminent closure.

Fortuitously the area group rallied about to help save their gorgeous regional landmark and a restoration venture will start off in the summer months of 2015.

St John The Baptist is Quality II* Outlined.
