St John The Baptist
Church of England

Wall portray

The church dates again to C12 and was allegedly founded in reaction to Pagan worship on the nearby White Horse Hill.

Unusually, its interior was remaining mainly untouched by the Victorians, and as a final result it offers exceptional C14 wall paintings depicting Peter, Paul, Herod and Salomé (with the Baptist’s head on a platter), beautiful medieval stained glass, and outstanding C15 to C17 woodwork, which include great bench finishes, panelling, pulpit and rood display screen.

Unfortunately, in spite of this treasure trove of heritage the church fell into this kind of a very poor state of repair that it was positioned on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ Sign up, and even confronted imminent closure.

Luckily the neighborhood community rallied all around to help you save their beautiful area landmark and a restoration venture will start out in the summer of 2015.

St John The Baptist is Grade II* Mentioned.
