St John The Baptist
Church of England
East window and wall paintings.
The church dates back to C12 and was allegedly established in response to Pagan worship on the close by White Horse Hill.
Unusually, its inside was left mainly untouched by the Victorians, and as a final result it boasts exceptional C14 wall paintings depicting Peter, Paul, Herod and Salomé (with the Baptist’s head on a platter), beautiful medieval stained glass, and extraordinary C15 to C17 woodwork, together with fine bench ends, panelling, pulpit and rood monitor.
Sadly, regardless of this treasure trove of heritage the church fell into these types of a inadequate point out of repair that it was put on the English Heritage ‘At Risk’ Register, and even confronted imminent closure.
Fortunately the regional community rallied around to preserve their stunning community landmark and a restoration undertaking will begin in the summer months of 2015.
St John The Baptist is Grade II* Outlined.
