Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge

Jesus University may not be the oldest of Cambridge’s colleges, but irrespective it can nevertheless boast the oldest chapel. The current cruciform developing was previously the monastic church of St Mary & St Radegund, a convent of nuns established in 1157. This was dissolved in 1496 when the existing faculty was founded on the similar web page by Bishop John Alcock with the previous convent church tailored to use as the current university chapel, which included several modifications to its structure together with the demolition of various areas including the greater aspect of the nave. The existing chapel is so a lowered version of the primary church, but it is nevertheless distinctly unique in form from other school chapels, making its former monastic use all the far more obvious.

A single ways the chapel from the north west by means of a cloister (significantly altered from its original condition) and it is promptly obvious that much of the nave has been changed by university properties, minimizing it to identical proportions to the transepts. The central tower is sq. and considerably squat, a late medieval rebuild immediately after the foundation of the college.

Inside the truncated nave there would be a sense of starkness from the plain white walls have been it not for the splashes of colour from the home windows and the richly decorated ceiling, all beautiful illustrations of Pre-Raphaelite artwork by William Morris and his circle, the chapel windows getting mainly filled with a collection of figures from cartoons by Burne Jones. The influence is loaded and fulfilling and has breathed new lifestyle into this ancient setting up. The choir beyond is partly hid by wealthy woodwork, the chancel monitor and the elaborately carved stalls which keep some noteworthy illustrations of late medieval carving. The choir itself is a handsome illustration of Early English architecture with slender lancet home windows, these remaining crammed with Hardman glass, the only windows not adorned with Morris & Co layouts.

Jesus Higher education Chapel is a single of my complete favourites, a delightful setting up with some wonderful glass. Happily it seems to be one of the much more customer friendly colleges in Cambridge owning normally identified it possible to wander all over freely although by some means averting the crowds of travellers that sure other Cambridge schools attract.
