Created in 1864 by Joseph I. Irwin, Columbus banker and businessman, this Italianate style and design was remodeled in 1880. On the other hand, to accommodate four generations of the Irwin loved ones, the property has been enlarged and redesigned above the many years. The recent mansion was the magnificent achievement of Henry A. Phillips, a Massachusetts architect, who was hired by William G. Irwin in 1910. The intricate depth of the in depth good woodwork and moldings in the course of the residence are reminiscent of a European estate. The previous brick exterior was covered by tapestry brick with stone trim, and quite a few new chimneys, which are now a prominent characteristic of the property, were included. The roof was recovered in slate and the pitch was altered, providing for a much more roomy third flooring. On the east, a lifted terrace was extra to link the property to the adjoining Back garden.
The spotlight of this two-acre house is the back garden, a lovely maze centered on the Casa degli Innamorati in Pompeii. Quite a few fountains and a lengthy pool are the focal place of a reduced sunken backyard garden. There is a statue underneath the heart arch of the back garden household made from a lakeside composition at the Villa of Hadrian at Tivoli, Italy. Pompeian murals accent the back garden property. A tall brick wall is rounded in imitation of 16th-century gardens in Mantua, Italy. Wisteria vines on the terrace’s pergolas were planted in 1911, and continue to bloom in the spring. Only the English sundial and a Japanese bronze elephant sculpture that is a reproduction of one particular at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Truthful pavilion do not observe the Italian motif.
