Lately, a mate who taught lots of of the photography workshops I have attended questioned me to support him out with a woodworking challenge: he has an antique workbench that he wishes to set again into use, but he’s dropped the knobs that went on the first tommy bars (handles) for the two wood vises on the bench. He requested if I could reproduce them. I agreed, as I’d been contemplating about developing some things with wooden screws (e.g., nipping push for bookbinding) anyway, and needed to get some of the tooling and capabilities wanted for that. So I took on the challenge. We agreed that I’d create total new handles, as matching the perhaps exclusive screw threads on the original ones could be challenging. The venture has turned out to be an attention-grabbing journey…

In purchase to refamiliarize myself with the pole lathe, I grabbed an outdated chunk of Norway maple sapling from the back property that I might tossed in the scrap bin yrs back. It truly is pretty dry, but already rather cylindrical, if uneven. I just started off by roughing it into a little something more cylindrical and commencing to function out what was wanted to type a neat tenon that I could use the screwbox on. 1 edge to doing this on the lathe rather than by way of the hollow auger is that it is more probably to be on-axis of the rest of the piece. So as extended as I was setting up the lathe in any case, it was a better way to do it. As well as I could use the hollow auger to clear up the tenon’s shoulder if needed.
