Iffley church is concealed downstream of Oxford amid the sprawl made by the Cowley automobile is effective. It lies in an oasis of cottages and chestnut trees, billowing with springtime blossom. Previously mentioned the trees rises the celebrated, sturdy tower. Closer to, we see one of England’s favorite Norman churches, intensely restored and with later insertions, but primarily as crafted in the 12th century. The church program retains the original capabilities of crossing tower, cl1ancel and unaisled nave. Only the west and east finishes have been reconstructed, largely to rectify unsympathetic 17th-century alterations. The big west window is Victorian but dependent on archaeological proof. The joy of Iffley is in the detail, in the chunky, barbaric richness of doorway and window surrounds. These are mainly carved with zigzag and beakhead around roll-moulding, developing a jazzy result of monsters with massive beaks biting into prolonged rolls of bread. In between these creatures are battling horsemen, Samson and indicators of the zodiac. Most elaborate, and seemingly most first, is carving spherical the south doorway. The interior is dominated by mighty tower arches with extra zigzag, foliage and rollmoulding, the attractive effect enriched with Purbeck marble shafts. These shafts are much more attribute of Early Gothic building and display Iffley bordering on Transitional. Certainly the chancel was partly rebuilt in the 13th century and has a rib vault and shafted lancet home windows attribute of Early Gothic. It also displays naturalistic carving, dragons, rosettes and a nesting chicken, a superb burst of exuberance. This exuberance is reflected in John Piper’s glass installed in 1995 in the south-west window, offered posthumously by his widow and composed of birds against a dim blue qualifications.I previous noticed Iffley with an Easter marriage in progress. The air was crammed with the scent of bouquets, the organ was booming by way of the open up doorway, and the collecting experienced thick Oxfordshire accents, now a rarity in this aspect of the county. A late Norman (1170) demonstrate piece, and rightly so, inside and with out. W. front prosperous in beakhead and zigzag carving. Dim aisled inside demonstrates eastward perspective of two elaborate Norman arches with vaulting in between, foremost to contrasting light-weight Early English vaulted W. conclusion. Regrettable Victorian woodwork.JB
