Particulars

Almshouses, Warden’s Dwelling and free of charge university, 1668, designed for Lady Margaret Hungerford of Corsham Courtroom. Rubble stone and stone tiled roofs, two and a 50 % storeys, ‘L’-system with principal front to west, Warden’s Residence to remaining and schoolroom to correct, and almshouse selection working east, struggling with north to Lacock Highway. West assortment has hipped roof with central timber cupola and leaded cap. Ornate projecting gabled centre with moulded coping, apex oval light-weight and elaborate very first floor carved Hungerford arms in pilastered frame with open segmental pediment, further more arms above pediment, crests above pediment angles, inscription panel beneath framed by pedestals to pilasters with lion masks. Moulded elliptical-arched doorway with carved spandrels in Ionic columned encompass with entablature, damaged ahead in excess of columns, and rosettes in pulvinated frieze. Stone seats within and framed plank double doors in moulded elliptical-arched surround with carved spandrels. Warden’s Household, to still left, has just one dormer gable with 3-light window and hoodmould, dripcourses more than floor and first floors, on very first flooring stepped about early C18 twelve-pane sash in raised moulded surround and continued more than 2-mild mullion window in angle to porch. Floor floor dripcourse stepped around comparable early C18 sash and continued to suitable more than two 2-mild home windows. North aspect has array of 7 coped gables, each individual with 2-mild windows, one gable to Warden’s House, 6 to 6 almshouses. Steady stepped dripmoulds to initially and floor floors. Almshouses have typical front, slight variation in stop wall of Warden’s Property, with initial floor and ground ground C18 twelve-pane sashes as on west front, dripmoulds stepped around and single mild to still left on initial flooring, 2-gentle to ground floor left. Almshouses have even variety of 6 1st flooring 3- gentle windows interrupted at centre for elaborate armorial decoration, smaller edition of that on west porch. Ground floor home windows and doorways in thrice recurring arrangement of 3-mild, paired doors with 2-light-weight in between and 3-gentle, dripcourse stepped over paired doors. Oak plank doorways. About central carved arms, in between gables, is ashlar stepped parapet. Rear of almshouse assortment has 6 chimney gables with diagonal shafts, 3 teams of 3 2-light initial floor windows with hoodmoulds, ground flooring stone-tiled lean to with timber posts and 6 rear doors with two 2-light-weight home windows amongst each of to start with five, a person 2-gentle each individual aspect of sixth. Oak plank doorways. Lean-to returns marginally at rear of Warden’s House. which has chimney gable to suitable, to start with ground arched single gentle to left more than oak plank doorway to cross-passage in moulded elliptical- arched surround. Interiors have impressive complete fittings of 1668, notably in the schoolroom with carved fronted gallery at north conclusion, canted-fronted master’s dais at south close, 2 ranges of panelled university benches down west wall and 50 percent of east wall, sq. enclosures of benches just about every facet of dais and unconventional assistant master’s seat built-in into front of dais wth entrance legs, seat and arms projecting. Great moulded stone hearth. Basic plastered 10-panel ceiling. Cross- passage to north with Warden’s Residence over and above. Stair Hall with fantastic carved woodwork, fretted arches around south door and foot of stair. Pet dog-leg stair with finials and pendants to newels, closed strings, carved balusters and large moulded rail. Tudor-arched fireplaces to rear of stair hall, 1st floor rear and one attic place. North- west corner rooms altered in early C18. Almshouse variety interiors not inspected but steady attic loft of some 14 bays with tie- beam-and-collar trusses, original curved pressure braces surviving only to past 2 collars.
