House 05, Owned by Jacob Nicholas

Jacob Nicholas House 05

The Nicholas House, located on 5th and Ferry Streets in Easton, is a historic building that has served as the home of a working-class family throughout its history. Named after Jacob Nicholas, a wood turner and later owner/captain of a Durham boat, the house was built in 1807 in the colonial-style “bank” house architecture of the Federal Period. The most notable feature of the house is its original 200-year-old brick entry walk, while the kitchen features a walk-in beehive fireplace oven for baking.

Despite its age, the house has been well-preserved, with much of its interior woodwork remaining original to the building. The second-floor furnishings date from the 1830s and add to the overall historic charm of the house. In November 1976, the Jacob Nicholas House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now owned by the City of Easton, remaining under the care of the NCHGS.

The Nicholas House is open for tours on special event dates and by appointment for school or group tours. To learn more about the house or to book a tour, interested individuals can contact 610-253-1222 for information.
