Holy Trinity, Sutton Coldfield

Sutton Coldfield’s ancient parish church of Holy Trinity experienced extensive been on my ‘to do’ checklist, acquiring unsuccessful to gain entry on my last pay a visit to a pair of years back. I would been in a position to delight in it is purple sandstone exterior, with it’s combination of 15th century and Victorian aspects, but it truly is internal visual appearance and contents mainly remained a thriller to me, until finally now.

I was quite amazed by the interior with it’s loaded jumble of furnishings and painted ceilings, a real gem with loads of interest. The church by itself is pretty restored (the outer north aisle is a Victorian extension), and the arcades are all curiously rounded from mid 16th century and afterwards rebuildings and reveal galleries in the aisles. It all appeared pretty gloomy with so a lot red stone and dim woodwork, but C.E.Bateman’s early 20th century ceiling decoration (nave, chancel and north chapel) is stunning and does a lot to cheer up an in any other case sombre inside. There is some great submit-Reformation woodwork in the chancel screens and stalls, a lot having been ejected from Worcester Cathedral through Scott’s restoration.

There is some excellent glass, the east window is incredibly fruity 1850s by Gibbs, but my favourite glass was the wonderful 1907 Supper at Emmaus by Mary Lowndes, alongside with the Yoxall & Whitford windows close by in the south chapel. There are some exciting monuments, a number of great tablets, a big Baroque piece with busts and the tomb and effigy of Bishop Vesey, supposedly the original 1550s determine but seeking so totally renewed I was persuaded it was a modern-day pastiche (Pevsner characteristics way too a lot tlc!). There is also a fantastic Norman font, originally in close by Nether Whitacre church prior to it is really rebuilding.

I had listened to superior factors about this church following my 1st tried visit, so right after concluding my organization in neighbouring Streetly I arrived straight in this article. It is regretably continue to generally retained locked, so I attempted asking at the parish centre opposite, and soon after an initially marginally lukewarm reception (perhaps far more warning would have aided) a woman kindly presented to open up for me. I pointed out I was eager to see the church and it is furnishings as they are, getting listened to about plans for a important reordering, nevertheless owing to the enormous charges associated this was dismissed as staying some way off, potentially 5 or so several years, so no concrete programs just but.
