St Nicholas, Very little Saxham, Suffolk
Very little Saxham is a handsome village, not much from the edge of the Ickworth estate. The church is established at the eastern end of the village wherever the key highway from Bury forks, agricultural cars and 4x4s thundering out of the blue all over corners concealed by ancient yews, the perspective of the church by itself spoilt relatively by an exuberant use of street furnishings. And genealogists building their way in this article would be unhappy to find out that the southern facet of Little Saxham churchyard was quite effectively cleared of all its more mature gravestones by lawnmower enthusiasts in the 1960s. A several of the older headstones have been reset in a line to the south of the nave, with some great18th century types in the vicinity of the porch. An previous photograph inside the church displays this graveyard as it after was, an entrancing jumble of priceless historic memorials. But the vast expanse of grass does, at least, offset Suffolk’s greatest round tower, and perhaps England’s. Beside it is just one of the most breathtakingly pretty tower arches in Suffolk, a tremendous thing in these types of a little church, completely attractive, boosting the eye heavenwards. The doorway over it recalls the one particular at Thorington, wherever the tower is also not dissimilar. Under the arch are panels of the rood monitor, lions, squirrels and eagles going through every single other off in the spandrels. Beside the tower arch is the parish war memorial, with a few names on it. Frederick Fisher was wounded at Ypres, and died of his wounds at household in Tiny Saxham in 1919. The other two on the memorial are brothers, George and William Sansom. George was killed at Neuve Chapelle in 1915, William on the Somme in 1916. The two brothers are also remembered on Frederick Fisher’s headstone exterior in a gloomy corner of the churchyard.
Turning eastwards, the quantity and quality of medieval woodwork is putting for these kinds of a humble setting up. It just isn’t really hard to kind it out from the 19th century stuff, broadly speaking the newer benches are on the south side. The entrance to the vestry is from the east conclusion of the north aisle. It is kept locked. Even so, it is well worth speaking to the keyholder shown on the door, mainly because, from its days as the Lucas chapel, it nevertheless contains the somewhat spectacular tomb of William, to start with Baron Crofts, in all its 1670s Restoration glory.
