The castle was built from the 12th century by the barons of Beynac (a person of the 4 baronies of Périgord) to close the valley. The sheer cliff encounter becoming adequate to discourage any assault from that aspect, the defences ended up crafted up on the plateau: double crenellated walls, double moats, one of which was a deepened pure ravine, double barbican.

The oldest section of the castle is a significant, square-formed, Romanesque continue to keep with vertical sides and few openings, held with each other with hooked up check out towers and outfitted with a narrow spiral staircase terminating on a crenellated terrace. To 1 facet, a residence of the very same period is connected it was remodelled and enlarged in the 16th and 17th centuries. On the other facet is a partly 14th century home aspect-by-side with a courtyard and a square strategy staircase serving the 17th century residences. The apartments have held their woodwork and a painted ceiling from the 17th century. The Salle des États (States’ Corridor) has a Renaissance sculptured fireplace and prospects into a small oratory entirely coated with 15th century frescoes, bundled a Pietà, a Saint Christopher, and a Very last Supper in which Saint Martial (initial bishop of Limoges) is the maître d’hôtel.

At the time of the Hundred Years’ War, the fortress at Beynac was in French palms. The Dordogne was the border concerning France and England. Not much absent, on the reverse financial institution of the river, the Château de Castelnaud was held by the English. The Dordogne location was the theatre of various struggles for impact, rivalries and often battles amongst the English and French supporters. However, the castles fell a lot more typically via ruse and intrigue instead than by immediate assault, simply because the armies needed to get these castles were being very costly: only the richest nobles and kings could procure them.

The castle was purchased in 1962 by Lucien Grosso who has restored it.
