Tam Makers, a community-driven group based in Mill Valley, California, is building an art float that celebrates Mother Earth and encourages people to participate in democracy. The aim is to inspire young people and those from diverse backgrounds by creating a fusion of art, music, and technology that promotes social change. The art show will be presented at various parades throughout California, starting with Earth Day, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July events in Marin County.
The float boasts a carousel of waving hands drawn by a giant feathered serpent, while performers will share stories full of hope against a backdrop of images that represent a better world. The float has been designed to encourage its audience to participate in the democratic process by presenting the importance of voting. The podium will be available for people to offer ideas for social change via a news ticker. The project is being run by Tam Makers, led by co-founders Fabrice Florin and Geo Monley. The float has been created through the work of over 60 volunteers and makers, with support from educational and civic organizations.
Work on the float started in February 2018 and is scheduled to finish by April 2018. Volunteers are welcome to participate and can join in Thursday evenings between 4 and 9pm, or on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm. Anyone interested in volunteering can get in touch with the project team at float@tammakers.org
The Art Float For Social Change project is community-focused and aspires to inspire people to vote in the next election by encouraging them to become more politically and socially aware. The aim is to involve young people and people from different backgrounds in the democratic process so they can positively impact their communities. The float provides an opportunity to do so through the creative fusion of art, music, and technology. The design of the float is rooted in an appreciation of the natural world and its ability to change the world we live in. Mother Earth is the central figure in the design, with the woven bamboo and wood representing nature’s sustainable technology.
The giant serpent figure on the float carries a metaphoric message of renewal and transformation, as serpents are known to shed their skin and regenerate. The giant waving hands which move up and down are symbolic of community interaction, as parades typically involve audience participation as well as performers. The stories of hope being shared by performers on the float aim to affirm positive action and engender belief in the power of social change. The backdrop of idyllic scenes of life on earth is designed to create a sense of longing for a better world, and inspire people to take action to create it.
The Art Float for Social Change project aims to provide an opportunity for members of the community to express themselves and share their dreams of the world. This is where the podium comes in, which serves as an open forum for people to express their opinions and ideas. The news ticker, which scrolls latest messages, offers another avenue for communication.
The Tam Makers project has received support from Tamalpais High School, civic and educational organizations, and as well as art institutions. The aim is to create a diverse, accessible project. Everyone is welcome to volunteer – all the necessary skills will be shared and taught on site for those who are new to these kinds of projects.
