In the 1930s to 1940s Otter Creek was the second premier local community in Levy County with a population approaching 1,000.
The reduction of a lumber mill that built cypress for citrus crates and discontinuation of two railroads which bisected the city led to a steady populace decline.
In 2007 the Town Council developed a nearby historic district consisting of neighborhoods with firm city residences that day from the 19th and early 20th century.
