East Window, Sutton Coldfield

Chancel east window, a fine illustration of the perform of Alexander Gibbs, 1863.

Sutton Coldfield’s historical parish church of Holy Trinity had extended been on my ‘to do’ list, owning failed to gain entry on my very last stop by a pair of several years ago. I’d been able to love it is really purple sandstone exterior, with it is really mixture of 15th century and Victorian features, but it is really inner physical appearance and contents largely remained a thriller to me, until now.

I was quite impressed by the inside with it really is loaded jumble of furnishings and painted ceilings, a true gem with lots of fascination. The church by itself is rather restored (the outer north aisle is a Victorian extension), and the arcades are all curiously rounded from mid 16th century and later on rebuildings and expose galleries in the aisles. It all appeared really gloomy with so a great deal red stone and darkish woodwork, but C.E.Bateman’s early 20th century ceiling decoration (nave, chancel and north chapel) is attractive and does substantially to cheer up an otherwise sombre inside. There is some good publish-Reformation woodwork in the chancel screens and stalls, substantially obtaining been ejected from Worcester Cathedral throughout Scott’s restoration.

There is some very good glass, the east window is very fruity 1850s by Gibbs, but my favourite glass was the good 1907 Supper at Emmaus by Mary Lowndes, together with the Yoxall & Whitford windows close by in the south chapel. There are some appealing monuments, a number of high-quality tablets, a big Baroque piece with busts and the tomb and effigy of Bishop Vesey, supposedly the initial 1550s figure but on the lookout so totally renewed I was persuaded it was a modern-day pastiche (Pevsner attributes much too a great deal tlc!). There is also a high-quality Norman font, originally in close by Nether Whitacre church prior to it can be rebuilding.

I had read good factors about this church right after my initial tried check out, so soon after concluding my organization in neighbouring Streetly I arrived straight here. It is sad to say however commonly kept locked, so I experimented with asking at the parish centre opposite, and following an originally slightly lukewarm reception (potentially more warning would have helped) a woman kindly available to open up up for me. I stated I was eager to see the church and it can be furnishings as they are, obtaining listened to about designs for a important reordering, nevertheless owing to the big costs associated this was dismissed as getting some way off, potentially 5 or so a long time, so no concrete options just yet.
