East Window, Sutton Coldfield

East Window, Sutton Coldfield

Chancel east window, a high-quality instance of the work of Alexander Gibbs, 1863.

Sutton Coldfield’s ancient parish church of Holy Trinity experienced extensive been on my ‘to do’ list, owning failed to gain entry on my previous go to a couple of many years back. I’d been in a position to appreciate it truly is pink sandstone exterior, with it is combination of 15th century and Victorian features, but it really is inner appearance and contents mostly remained a secret to me, until eventually now.

I was extremely impressed by the interior with it can be loaded jumble of furnishings and painted ceilings, a real gem with plenty of interest. The church itself is really restored (the outer north aisle is a Victorian extension), and the arcades are all curiously rounded from mid 16th century and later rebuildings and expose galleries in the aisles. It all seemed fairly gloomy with so a great deal red stone and darkish woodwork, but C.E.Bateman’s early 20th century ceiling decoration (nave, chancel and north chapel) is lovely and does significantly to cheer up an usually sombre interior. There is some fantastic submit-Reformation woodwork in the chancel screens and stalls, a great deal getting been ejected from Worcester Cathedral in the course of Scott’s restoration.

There is some very good glass, the east window is very fruity 1850s by Gibbs, but my favorite glass was the wonderful 1907 Supper at Emmaus by Mary Lowndes, along with the Yoxall & Whitford home windows nearby in the south chapel. There are some fascinating monuments, several fine tablets, a massive Baroque piece with busts and the tomb and effigy of Bishop Vesey, supposedly the authentic 1550s figure but hunting so totally renewed I was certain it was a modern day pastiche (Pevsner attributes far too much tlc!). There is also a fantastic Norman font, at first in close by Nether Whitacre church prior to it’s rebuilding.

I had heard great points about this church right after my 1st tried take a look at, so right after concluding my business enterprise in neighbouring Streetly I came straight here. It is sad to say nonetheless generally retained locked, so I tried out inquiring at the parish centre opposite, and immediately after an originally somewhat lukewarm reception (possibly additional warning would have served) a girl kindly presented to open up up for me. I pointed out I was eager to see the church and it is furnishings as they are, having read about ideas for a main reordering, though owing to the massive costs included this was dismissed as remaining some way off, potentially 5 or so yrs, so no concrete options just yet.
