Darlington Hearth Station and in the background the previous St
Hilda’s Church crafted 1887-88 in pink brick in the Early English fashion by eminent C19 church architect J. L. Pearson. The stained glass and inside fittings were being eradicated shortly right after closure in 1986. The church then endured a hearth prior to remaining obtained and re-made use of for worship by the Lifestyle and Gentle Mission.
A new parish was shaped from St John’s Church, Darlington containing a populace of 11,000. The internet site was donated by Mary Eason of Ladbrooke Gardens, Notting Hill, London who also contributed £1,000 to the cost of building and a different £1,000 to its endowment.
The foundation stone was laid by the Bishop of Durham on 21 September 1887.
The church was created by the architect John Loughborough Pearson. It consisted of a nave, north and south aisles, organ chamber, chapel, chancel and two vestries. The west window forgotten Parkgate. A tower was planned but not designed. The roofs were of pitch pine open up woodwork, and in the nave are six piers of stone with moulded bases and capitals, supporting arches of stone and brick. 4 triple light-weight lancet clerestory home windows illuminated the church as the creating was surrounded by other tall structures. The altar was of oak, and the floor paved with wooden blocks, and Staffordshire tiles.
The brick and stone functions was finished by Messrs McKenzie Bros, the joiner was R.T. Smith, the plumbing was performed by H. Patch, the roof slating by Messrs J. & G. Wharton, and the painting by Messrs W.H. & W. Hoskins.
The pulpit was the reward of Mrs. R. Kid and was built by the architect and created of Leeds stone by Messrs Priestman & Sons, Blackwellgate, Darlington. The font was the present of Mrs. Harland. The brass lectern was the reward of Mr. W. Russell.
Pevsner famous that the making was a boldly massed composition of nave, chancel, N chapel, and S vestries, despite remaining extremely low cost.
The church was consecrated on 30th August 1888 by the Bishop of Durham Rt Revd. Joseph Lightfoot.
