Tam Makers, a community of crafters and creators in Mill Valley, California, is producing an Art Float for Social Change aimed at inspiring greater participation in the democratic process among young people and people of colour. The parade float will feature music, art and technology to draw the attention of potential voters, with plans to present the float at parades during Earth Day, Memorial Day and Fourth of July in Marin, and throughout California in the autumn. The aim is to encourage political engagement and preparation for the next election.
The float is adorned in imagery celebrating Mother Earth, with a giant feathered serpent pulling a carousel of waving hands. Performers on a stage decorated with pictorial depictions of the utopian world they are striving for will share their messages of hope, as large signs encourage attendees to speak out and advocate for voting.
The community project is led by Fabrice Florin and Geo Monley, co-founders of Tam Makers, and is being created by a team of student and skilled volunteers. The Tam High School is hosting the project; local partners in the education, civic and arts fields are providing additional support. The float will be assembled at Tam Makers on Thursday evenings or Saturday mornings.”
