Crafting a Float of Art for Promoting Social Change

Creating an Art Float for Social Change

Tam Makers is creating an Art Float for Social Change as a way of encouraging more people to participate in democracy. The parade float is designed to appeal to youth and people of color through art, music, and technology. The Art Float will be presented on Earth Day, Memorial Day, and Fourth of July parades in Marin and throughout California this fall.

The Art Float will showcase a carousel of waving hands pulled by a giant feathered serpent in celebration of mother earth. Performers will share stories of hope on a stage decorated with images of a better world. Large signs will invite people to speak up and vote, with a podium provided for those who want to pitch ideas for social change or have them scroll on the news ticker.

The project is a community art project created by a team of students and makers led by Fabrice Florin and Geo Monley, co-founders of Tam Makers in Mill Valley. The Art Float is hosted by Tam High School, and the project has received support from volunteers and art, civic, and educational partners.

The project runs from March to April 2018, with volunteer opportunities available on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Those wanting to volunteer can email the team at float@tammakers.org.

In summary, the Art Float for Social Change is a project designed to inspire more people to engage with the democratic process, with a focus on multicultural and youth populations. The Art Float celebrates mother earth and encourages individuals to take action through storytelling, technology, and public participation. The project is a community-focused initiative, with support from volunteers and civic partners.
