Cloister Walkway, Hoarwithy

A surprise awaits the visitor to Hoarwithy, for listed here is a church in contrast to any other in Herefordshire, or in the place for that issue. St Catherine’s asserts its presence with a bell tower that could appear a lot more at household in Tuscany than the rural Herefordshire countryside! The overall church is designed in a lavish Italian-influenced Neo-Romanesque and looks its best when bathed in the daylight that most evokes the land that motivated it.

The current church is the result of the rebuilding of an existing chapel below in 1854 when William Poole was appointed vicar and J.P. Seddon subsequently appointed architect. Seddon’s church is a exceptional eyesight entire with an apsed chancel and towering bell-tower and most memorable of all a covered ‘cloister’ colonnade wrapping by itself all around the south and west faces of the building to guide the visitor to the west entrance. There is a delight in element below with carved capitals and mosaic flooring that display no expense was spared on this project.

Within the church the major nave is a significant hall underneath an open up picket roof, (significantly of this aspect becoming a remodeling of the earlier chapel) even though beyond the chancel is separated by three rounded arches with the mosaic-topped apse outside of which is the most sumptuously adorned part of the setting up with intricate capitals and carved woodwork. There is some hanging glass much too, in fact my 1st ever stop by right here was back again in 2000 as element of the group releading the home windows in the west wall (subsequently this much more latest visit was the to start with time I would at any time viewed the church no cost of scaffolding!).

Hoarwithy church is a true gem, a pleasant and small regarded oddity well worth trying to find out. It is generally saved open and welcoming for visitors to love, and on this celebration community artists have been exhibiting right here (fairly excellent they ended up as well, I was tempted so considerably I purchased a pair of prints).
