Class of 1987: Pool Center

Pool Centre class (1987

In the summer of 1987, a number of individuals attended a woodwork class at the Pool Centre in the UK. The class was led by Joe Bell, a joinery instructor, and included Brian Ogilvie, Robert Batchelor, Bruce Milligan, Allan Jarret, Frankie and David Payne, and Derek Irvine. Throughout the course, these individuals honed their woodworking skills and created various projects.

The woodwork shop at the Pool Centre provided a space for individuals to learn and practice woodworking techniques. With Joe Bell’s guidance, the participants were able to experiment with different tools and materials, and ultimately create functional and aesthetically pleasing woodwork projects. Whether they were beginners or had some previous experience with woodworking, the course offered a valuable opportunity to improve their skills.

Brian Ogilvie, one of the students in the class, had some experience with woodworking prior to attending the course. He had previously worked in a joinery shop and had developed basic skills in woodwork. In the class, he was able to build on these skills and create a variety of projects. One of his completed projects was a wall-mounted display case, which he created by carefully measuring and cutting wood to fit the size of the glass panels he had chosen. He also made a set of shelves, which he finished with a natural wood stain.

Robert Batchelor had little experience with woodworking before the course, but was enthusiastic and eager to learn. He worked on a variety of projects, including a small table and a set of coasters. With Joe Bell’s help, he learned to use a variety of power tools, including a table saw and a router. He also had the opportunity to experiment with different types of wood, and learned how to select the best materials for his projects.

Bruce Milligan was another student who had some experience with woodworking prior to the course. However, he had never taken a structured course and was excited to learn more about joinery and woodworking techniques. In the class, he worked on a number of projects, including a set of shelves, a stool, and a wooden box. Through trial and error, he was able to improve his skills and create functional and attractive pieces.

Allan Jarret was an experienced woodworker who had previously worked as a carpenter. He attended the class in order to hone his skills and learn about new techniques and materials. He worked on several projects throughout the course, including a bookshelf and a rocking chair. He also had the opportunity to teach some of the other students, sharing his knowledge and experience with them.

Frankie and David Payne were a mother and son duo who attended the course together. Frankie had some experience with woodworking, having learned some basic skills from her father. David, on the other hand, was completely new to woodworking. Together, they worked on a number of projects, including a wooden clock and a set of picture frames. Frankie was able to refresh her skills and teach David some of the basics of woodworking, while David learned about the tools and techniques of the craft.

Derek Irvine was another student in the class. He had little experience with woodworking and was primarily interested in learning the basics. Over the course of the class, he worked on a number of projects, including a birdhouse and a small bench. He also had the opportunity to learn about the different types of wood and the properties of each, and how to select the best material for his projects.

Overall, the woodwork class at the Pool Centre in June 1987 provided a valuable opportunity for individuals of all skill levels to learn and practice woodworking techniques. Through Joe Bell’s guidance and support, the students were able to improve their skills and create a variety of functional and aesthetically pleasing woodwork projects. Whether they were new to woodworking or had some previous experience, the class offered a valuable learning experience and a chance to connect with other enthusiasts in the craft.
