nrhp # 92000822- The depot was crafted in 1902 of crimson-faced brick and stone trimming. It consisted of a baggage room, men’s ready home, spouse and children ready home, and the east finish lunch area. For 87 a long time the Chicago-North Western Railroad experienced passenger rail company at Sleepy Eye. The streamliner “Dakota 400” designed its final halt in Sleepy Eye on October25, 1959. After that, the depot served as a freight office.
In the early 1980’s the C&NW Railroad presented to provide the depot and Sleepy Eye Depot Preservation Inc. was formed to buy and renovate the depot. A fund push was commenced and in 1984 the depot was obtained. Considering the fact that that time several improvements have taken spot. The creating was re-roofed and the bricks ended up tuck pointed and cleaned. Within, the woodwork was completed and insulation was inserted guiding the wall panels. The floors have been sanded and sealed, a new electrical program and gas furnace ended up installed and the rest room place renovated. All the windows were replaced with new energy efficient types. A handicapped obtainable ramp and landscaping increased the constructing.
On July 3, 1990 the Sleepy Eye Spot Historic Society acquired the keys to the depot and opened a museum, which displays numerous artifacts from the Sleepy Eye location. On the grounds right up coming to the museum stands a tall granite obelisk, marking the gravesite of the Dakota Chief, Ish Tak Ha Ba (Sleepy Eye). In 1992, the depot was positioned on the Nationwide Sign up of Historic Places on June 25, 1992.
