History of Charleston’s Wentworth Mansion
Rodgers’ Mansion. Charleston’s greatest case in point of the 2nd Empire model, was designed in 1885-87 by Francis Silas Rodgers, a wealthy cotton factor, phosphate producer and coastwise shipper. His architect was Daniel G. Waynes. The 2nd Empire style, named for the reign of Emperor Napoleon lll of France, for the duration of which the mansard roof (a 16th century invention) was revived, was well-known in the U.S. from the 1850s to the 1890s. The inside is elaborately finished in mahogany, oak and walnut, with tile floors and ornate plasterwork, marble mantels and crystal chandeliers which had been developed for the residence.
Rodgers, a member of City Council and Chairman of the Board of Firemasters for 31 years, organized the city’s to start with paid professional hearth section. He preferred to view for fires from the cupola of his house and attended each fireplace in the city right up until shortly right before his demise. Cotton, a main source of his wealth, is memorialized in the bas-aid cornice about the front bay window which depicts cotton vegetation.
