Chancel Screen, Southwold

Just one the complete highlights of my visit, St Edmund’s church in Southwold is just one of -the most amazing parish church buildings in the country. Arriving late in the afternoon I was delighted to discover the church nonetheless open up and get rid of myself in its attractive inside.

The building dates from the latter 50 % of the 15th century and will make an assertive statement, all grandeur and civic pleasure on a grand scale. Great Perpendicular traceried windows punctuate the partitions of the entire edifice and make it gloriously light inside of (largely plain glazed as no primary glass survives and wartime bombing taken out what the Victorians put in).

Within just the eye is drawn to the hammerbeam roof, adorned with angels (even though all are partly or wholly Victorian replacements for the originals that were mutilated by iconoclasts). The chancel past (structurally continual) adds to the outcome further more with its ceiling painted in a heavenly shade of blue. A cover of honour is made concerning the two halves with painted figures of angels, overpainted by restorers but stylistically plainly shut to the original operate beneath.

This ceilure of class included emphasis to the rood, extended because vanished alas but the display screen that supported it stays and is the most extraordinary element of the church, extending its total width (although the screens in the aisles could be recognized as separate additions). All the decreased panels retain their sequence of late medieval painted figures including an uncommon sequence of angels, but sadly all have been defaced by iconoclasts, most probably during the reign of Edward VI when the most significant militant purge of church artwork transpired. The good quality and richness of depth however is nevertheless obvious.

The choir retains some high-quality medieval carved woodwork including choir stalls (the misericords are disappointingly basic layouts, but the armrests aspect a lot more lively details). Ornate screens enclose this house on possibly facet.

This broad church needs time to soak up its atmosphere and bask in its beauties, it is a single of the loveliest properties just one could hope to stop by and will reward any customer to this pictureque seaside city, staying normally kept open up and welcoming within sensible several hours.
