Chancel Ceiling, Sutton Coldfield

Sutton Coldfield’s ancient parish church of Holy Trinity had very long been on my ‘to do’ record, owning failed to acquire entry on my last visit a pair of years back. I would been able to enjoy it can be crimson sandstone exterior, with it is combination of 15th century and Victorian things, but it’s interior visual appeal and contents largely remained a thriller to me, right up until now.

I was quite amazed by the interior with it’s prosperous jumble of furnishings and painted ceilings, a true gem with lots of fascination. The church alone is very restored (the outer north aisle is a Victorian extension), and the arcades are all curiously rounded from mid 16th century and afterwards rebuildings and expose galleries in the aisles. It all looked very gloomy with so substantially crimson stone and darkish woodwork, but C.E.Bateman’s early 20th century ceiling decoration (nave, chancel and north chapel) is attractive and does considerably to cheer up an if not sombre interior. There is some fantastic publish-Reformation woodwork in the chancel screens and stalls, substantially having been ejected from Worcester Cathedral all through Scott’s restoration.

There is some very good glass, the east window is really fruity 1850s by Gibbs, but my favorite glass was the fantastic 1907 Supper at Emmaus by Mary Lowndes, together with the Yoxall & Whitford windows nearby in the south chapel. There are some interesting monuments, quite a few fine tablets, a massive Baroque piece with busts and the tomb and effigy of Bishop Vesey, supposedly the initial 1550s determine but wanting so thoroughly renewed I was persuaded it was a contemporary pastiche (Pevsner characteristics far too a great deal tlc!). There is also a wonderful Norman font, initially in nearby Nether Whitacre church prior to it truly is rebuilding.

I had heard great things about this church just after my to start with tried visit, so following concluding my small business in neighbouring Streetly I arrived straight here. It is however typically kept locked, so I tried asking at the parish centre opposite, and just after an originally slightly lukewarm reception (potentially much more warning would have helped) a lady kindly offered to open up up for me. I outlined I was eager to see the church and it truly is furnishings as they are, owning heard about options for a major reordering, nevertheless owing to the massive fees concerned this was dismissed as remaining some way off, maybe 5 or so several years, so no concrete options just yet.
