Craigievar Castle is a beautiful example of Scottish Baronial architecture that seems to have grown naturally out of the rolling hills. Completed in 1626, it is home to a fine collection of family portraits, original plaster ceilings, Jacobean woodwork, and beautiful furniture including the ‘Craigievar table’. The castle also boasts extensive parkland grounds with two waymarked walks, a small Victorian kitchen garden, and a Scottish glen garden. It is an iconic tower house, among the best preserved and the most loved in Scotland, and the Forbes family lived in the castle for 350 years until it was donated to the National Trust for Scotland complete with the vast majority of its contents.
Craigievar Castle is much more than just a tourist attraction; it was first and foremost a home, and the special family atmosphere is what endears it to visitors. The National Trust for Scotland has worked hard to preserve this atmosphere and after being closed for two years for major conservation work, the castle reopened to the public in 2010.
The large estate features woodland, parkland with magnificent specimen trees, and farmland with extensive views over the surrounding countryside to Bennachie. It is a must-see destination for anyone interested in Scottish history and architecture or who simply wants to experience the special family atmosphere that permeates this iconic castle.
