In November 2016, NASA invited artists from a variety of media to visit the Goddard Space Flight Center, inspired by the fully-assembled James Webb Space Telescope mirror, which is covered in a microscopic layer of actual gold. The artists represented different artistic styles and media, such as watercolor, 3D-printed sculpture, silk screening, acrylics, sumi-e, comics, letterpress, woodwork, metalwork, jewellery making, fiber art, ink, mural painting, kite-making, tattooing, scientific illustration, poetry, songwriting, and video making. During the event, the artists spent several hours creating sketches, paintings, photographs, and films of the mirror.
