This residence is one thing of a curiosity and the actuality that it was just one of the handful of properties to escape the fireplace of 1731 provides it an added fascination. It was designed about the center of the C17 by Dr Sagittary – a native of the Palatinate, who held English medical degrees and practised in Blandford. This origin may well clarify its Germanic character. Dr Sagittary died in 1696. L-shaped 2-storey purple brick dwelling with projecting porch wing at entrance. The roof, the lower component of which has stone slates, is hipped and steeply pitched. Guide flat to porch wing. The wide eaves soffit is supported on hefty shaped brackets of oak. Hipped dormers. The 2 chinmeys are octagonal on sq. bases and each has 8 round attached shafts with moulded brick bases and cappings. The Japanese component of the residence is of rusticated brickwork and there is a moulded brick eaves cornice. In excess of the spherical-headed doorway, which has rusticated brick voussoirs, there are types in reduce brickwork and a moulded niche. All this perform is mentioned to have been carried out in situ. Windows are leaded casements with moulded oak frames and mullions, All those to East part of household having transoms also. There was previously a modern staircase and other carved woodwork internally, but these were being taken out to Scotand, where they had been wrecked by fireplace. EH Listing
