Bishops Lydeard Station’s Gauge Museum, featuring West Somerset Railway and GWR Sleeping Car No. 9038 Corridor.

West Somerset Railway, Gauge Museum at Bishops Lydeard Station. GWR sleeping car no. 9038, corridor.

GWR Sleeping Car No 9038 was one of three first-class coaches introduced by the Great Western Railway (GWR) in 1897 to transport passengers between Paddington and the port of Fishguard before they boarded Irish ferries. The coach served for 34 years until 1931. In 1933, the coach body was repurposed and turned into a bungalow, where it remained for half a century under a tiled roof.

In 1985, the sleeping car was saved and transferred to the West Somerset Railway for a complete restoration. The team used a restored GWR underframe (chassis) and repurposed the interior woodwork of No 9039 coach donated by the Great Western Society at Didcot. Today, GWR Sleeping Car No 9038 has been restored to how it looked in 1925 and can be extensively viewed at the Gauge Museum at Bishops Lydeard Station.
