Patriki-Tuzluca is a village in the Famagusta District of Cyprus, positioned on the Karpas Peninsula. It is less than the de facto regulate of Northern Cyprus.
Patriki is the ancestral home of singer George Michael (Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou). His father, Kyriacos Panayiotou, was born listed here in 1935 and lived in the village performing with loved ones till 1953 when he remaining for England.[2]
The village has been below Turkish occupation due to the fact the 1974 invasion. The village used to be inhabited by Greek-Cypriots. In his e book Historic Cyprus (next version 1947) Rupert Gunnis (who was Inspector of Antiquities on the island at the time) wrote:
“The principal church of the village committed to the Archangel Michael is devoid of desire. In the vicinity of by lies a tiny Chapel of St. George, with a few fragments of early woodwork developed into the depressing iconostasis, which is usually shaped of boards from packing-instances. The lousy and late seventeenth-century holy doors from some ruined church are held in a coffee-shop.
“A single of the most curious area customs continue to remaining in the island is practised every Easter Monday in this village all the married individuals obtain into the churchyard, and the guys, without having off their coats, have to crawl through a gap in a big stone which stands in this article. If the man is not able to crawl as a result of this stone it indicates that his spouse is unfaithful to him, for it exhibits that he has antlers which protect against him from passing via. In 1935 only 1 guy caught, and he, on his return home, conquer his wife and has due to the fact begun divorce proceedings, the truth that he was unable to pass by way of the stone remaining regarded by him and his co-villagers as ample evidence.”
Pre 1974 the primary church applied by the Greek-Orthodox villagers was Archangelos Michail, even so it was desecrated by the Turks put up-1974 and has been used as a mosque since. The lesser church of Agios Georgios is in a bad point out, remaining desecrated also and used to shop fertilizer for agriculture. The village has two chapels, those people of Agios Prodromos and Panagia Trypimeni, both of which also stand in a point out of desecration and disrepair.
