Strategy of the Church of St Barbara, Ashton Less than Hill Worcestershire – flic.kr/p/2hsTmSD There was a church at “Edstone” right here at the time of the 1086 Domesday Study. It was a dependent chapel of the Minster (mother) church at Beckford nearby which was proven in late 8c. (They nevertheless share the exact same vicar) . In 1071 it was granted to the Abbey of St Mary at Cormeilles in Normandy. , the perseverance at that time was to St Andrew.
in 1128 the lordship of the manor of Beckford with Ashton was specified to the Normandy Abbey of St Barbe-en-Auge. Much afterwards in 1750 there is the initial reference to the church remaining dedicated to St Martin & St Barbara, The previous remaining dropped soon following.
The 14c porch was rebuilt to the unique design in 1903
The south doorway is from the Norman interval with attribute rounded arch and uncarved tympanum
No ancient woodwork survives in the nave, the pine pews have been set up for the duration of the 1867 restoration when a west minstrels gallery was also taken out. The 14c north aisle was also prolonged with the 2 western arches.
The tower display dates from the 1913 restoration, when a Georgian plaster ceiling was eliminated and the rafters exposed
The tower was built in two stages, the lower part with walls about 4 ft thick and 3 shallow buttresses is 13c. The higher area with battlemented parapets and angle gargoyles was extra in 15c.
There are 6 bells 4 were being recast by Rudhall of Gloucester, a further by the exact same maker in 1827 and the treble was additional in 1945/6. All rehung in 1964 .
The chancel was significantly rebuilt in 1624 . The chancel arch was rebuilt in 1836 by lord of th manor Sir John Franklin
In 19c Jane Dunn bequeathed £150 for the reward of the aged lousy of this Parish, the desire to be dispersed by the Vicar in coals per year at Christmas for ever.
