Aircraft

Aeroplane

This short content describes a prototype model that has been produced for a Practical Craft Skills Woodworking Skills course. The model has been designed with ‘prior-verification’, meaning that it has been created to test and verify the designs, materials, and construction methods that will be used in the final project.

The model is built around a propeller that is driven by pulleys off the front wheel axle. The majority of the model has been constructed using mahogany, with oak front wheels and a propeller pulley wheel. The propeller spinner, front and rear wheels, pilot, and pulley wheels were all turned on a wood lathe.

To finish the model, transparent coloured stain and varnish have been used to give it a polished and professional appearance. The overall purpose of the prototype model is to serve as a test case for the course instructor, so that they can make any necessary adjustments or refinements before the students begin their final projects.
